When I grow up…?

Sunday, July 24th, 2005

"What do you want to be when you grow up?" remains one of my favourite questions of all time. Especially useful to break the ice with people in their later stages in life.
I even started a book on this topic a few years ago. Then my computer crashed and though I still have the notes somewhere [...]

Knitting Meets Mathematics (everything is connected)

Friday, July 22nd, 2005

I believe everything is connected. And I love nothing more when I find that two seemingly divergent topics converge.
This time it is my new found interest, knitting/weaving, joins mathematics.
Huh? Well a mathematics researcher at Cornell, Dr. Daina Taimina, started crocheting to help her students visualise hyperbolic space…
"Hyperbolic plane - pseudosphere"

The idea has continued to engage and evole - most recently Dr. Taimina’s work was included [...]

Tuesday, July 19th, 2005

Now the NYTimes* reports that these web-based maps will be the next growth area in online advertising! How come? Programmers will be able to write code that links data to the maps thus allowing advertising to be embedded in maps.

To Change the Future…

Monday, July 18th, 2005

Change the Present, as you then Change the Past.*

Clearly I am having a reflecting time right now, however it seems suddenly clear to me that we all have the ability to change, or at least shape, the future (for the positive I hope)!
How? By excelling not only at reading (and remembering) the past, but in consciously doing [...]

London Bridge…

Saturday, July 9th, 2005

I have tried several times to write this post…In the end I am going to simply respond with a few threads:
1. Sending condolences to all those families and friends directly and indirectly involved, and lots of healing, warmth and positivity to London.
2.  I much admire the current English response. Though not one to make comparisions from one tragedy to another, the [...]
