Expressions of Hope

Following on from yesterday’s Live8 post today, one day later,  The Melbourne Age has an article on Live8 discussing the potential impacts of the concert and also raising the (serious) debate that ensues about how to best relief Africa of poverty:

"It was a moment of perfect theatre, but will it change the G8 leaders or the world?

In Britain, Live 8 has triggered a huge debate about the value of aid and debt relief, with sceptics saying that if aid is not accompanied by political change in Africa, then the money risks ending up in the Swiss bank accounts of corrupt leaders."

I am reminded of the proverb "Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime".

I am also again reminded by the comment of the Live8 website "We don’t want your money".

After wiping off the debt so as to give Africa a chance to catch-up, perhaps there are ways to innovate the HOW outside of money.

In a world, the one I live in, people like me in "developed" countries thrive through a reliance on economies on the periphery. My question is whether if we / our government’s knew of a way to help developing countries really thrive and enter our market they would?

I haven’t lost hope.
