Thanks for using my image.

Actually, I would be very pleased to get recommedations for my list
http://arielrubinstein.tau.ac.il/univ-coffee.html

The criterion: it should be a place where people can sit for hours and think/write being inspired by the surrounding.

The level of coffee is absolutely immaterial (and the place should not smell coffee). Actually I hate coffee (I like only nes-cafe

You must check out Housing Works Bookstore Café
126 Crosby St. (SoHo/NoHo/Little Italy) between Houston and Prince Sts.
http://www.housingworks.org/usedbookcafe/index.html
I found this gem wandering the streets during my last visit to New York.
Great food, great books, great vibe, great cause. Proceeds from the all-donated stock benefit homeless people living with HIV/AIDS.

If you are ever in the other York (Not the new one or the the one in Toronto) then try this cafe. It's delightful.
http://www.bettys.co.uk/
There's a pianist, toasted teacakes, a whole range of freshly ground coffees - and a queue outside because it's so popular!
Lots of light too - big windows - unless you are downstairs.
