The Sounds of Silence…

Please listen to Simon and Garfunkel’s Sound of Silence (click here) while reading my musing…

I have been thinking on and off about different types of silence…

Have you noticed how not all silence is the same? Or feels the same?

…When silence feels like a wonderful experience; When it is relaxing, scary, sad, traumatic, secretive, joyous…When there is a pregnant pause; a break in a musical score (or the whole piece itself, like 4′33). When you can hear the sound of waves crashing…When you meditate. (Or try).

…When in working in silence, or to soft music, you birth something new.

…The Shhh that feels good, and soothes. And the Shhh that feels bad…The Silence that is so loud it is deafening…

…Like when you have nothing to say. Or don’t know how. Or you can’t speak. Or no-one is listening.

As in the song.

May you have more pockets of silence that fill you with joy and open you to create…

May you enjoy the Sounds of Silence.

PS A little related story:

When I lived in New York I used to think The Sound(s) of Silence (and Elenor Rigby) was a good theme song for how a lot of people lived and communicated…and yet sad as the song may be, I love it! Perhaps it speaks a truth? Meanwhile yesterday I discovered that The Sound of Silence had a really interesting story - it took 3 years to reach the top-charts and actually led to Simon and Garfunkel getting back together after a split in ‘64…I’m not sure I can imagine a world where Simon and Garfunkel were silent! This little story feels good, because for me it also highlights the power of the artistic response. And reminds me a bit, that things take time. (T.T.T) But actually, in the whole scheme of things, not that long…
