Earth Hour 2008 – Turn off The Lights March 29th 20:00-21:00
Last year (’07) I was visiting my hometown Sydney, and I found myself quite proudly part of a little experiment by the city of Sydney "Earth Hour".
The concept was simple: have the whole city turn off their lights for 1 single hour to reduce greenhouse emissions.
Well this year Earth Hour has gone GLOBAL!

Of course it may seem ‘small’ – turning off lights for one hour? – but I was there, it certainly didn’t feel small! Or look it!
The whole cityscape went dark and there were lots of festivals by candelight…And it certainly did a lot to raise consciousness for the ‘little things each of us can do to make a difference’ (small changes => big impacts after all).
Of course I would love to see cities do this all the time – turn off unnecessary lighting and signage. For instance, "If the greenhouse reduction achieved in the Sydney Central Business District during Earth Hour was sustained for a year, it would be equivalent to taking 48,616 cars off the road for a year." And that’s just the centre of Sydney!
Of course this is just one of the many things linked to global warming / climate change: here are some others.
